IEA Newsletter from the IEA President No. 16 – October 2007 Dear Council Members, I am delighted to provide our October Newsletter to members of the IEA Federated Societies. 1. IEA Boston Council meeting - Minutes Confirmation The feedback on the IEA Council minutes closed on the 27th October. Pascale Carayon has now finalized the minutes and they will be recorded as the official minutes of this meeting. 2. IEA Council – 2008 – Reykjavik, Iceland The IEA Council voted to accept the invitation from the Nordic Ergonomics Society to hold our 2008 Council meeting from August 9-10, 2008 in Reykjavik, Iceland. This will be followed by the 40th Anniversary conference for NES. Please mark this in your diary now. The theme for the NES Conference will be “Ergonomics is a lifestyle”. 3. IEA Healthcare Systems Ergonomics and Patient Safety Conference 2008 The planning for the Second IEA conference on Healthcare Systems Ergonomics and Patient Safety (HEPS) is now well underway. Please visit the conference website - http://www.heps2008.org/. Consistent with our goal of strategic partnership we are approaching external organizations with related interests in Healthcare systems and Patient Safety. If you have an organization in your country that we should approach to be involved in the HEPS conference or trade display please inform us. 4. Agriculture Ergonomics Conference – AEDEC 2007 The IEA Conference on ergonomics in agriculture is to be hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from the 27th to the 29th November 2007. We are grateful for the assistance of Damai Services Sdn Bhd and Halimahtun Khalid for organizing the event with Universiti Putra Malaysia. This conference has received support from ILO, ICOH and the IEA, in particular to assist a large group of paper presenters from developing countries. At this stage, we are supporting 13 delegates from Indonesia plus several others from IDCs around the world. A provisional program is available at http://www.aedec2007.org 5. 2nd Symposium ATWAD: Activity2008 - Activity analyses for developing work. The second symposium organised by the IEA Technical Committee on Activity Theories for Work Analysis and Design will be held in Helsinki, Finland from the 12th – 14th May 2008. More information can be found at http://www.ttl.fi/activity2008. We are pleased to recognize the leadership of Pascal Beguin from CNAM, France, chair of the IEA Technical Committee. 6. Ergonomics with Indigenous Communities At the ULAERGO conference in Bogota, Columbia, I was asked about the study of Indigenous communities in terms of ergonomic issues. I am not aware of any specific research with indigenous communities. If anyone is working in this area, or knows of researchers who are working with these communities, could you please inform me? This is an important gap in our knowledge that should be part of our IDC program. 7. ULAERGO Conference The Latin American ergonomics conference was hosted in Bogota, Columbia, from the 16th – 19th October 2007. I specifically acknowledge the leadership and hard work by Nelcy Arevalo from Columbia who was Convener of this conference. The conference was very successful with a major theme on the sustainability of ergonomics. Three IEA Executive committee members - David Caple, Pierre Falzon and Marcelo Soares - attended the event too. 8. IEA 2012 Congress Dates – Recife, Brazil The Brazilian Ergonomics Society was selected by the IEA Council meeting in 2006 to host the IEA 2012 Congress. This will be the first time in 50 years that a triennial Congress is held in Latin America. The Congress was deliberately positioned during the week prior to “Carnivale” in Recife, Brazil. The proposed Congress dates are 12th and 16th February 2012. The weather is at its best at this time of year. This will be a major attraction for up to 1,000 attendees from Latin America plus for international participants. The conference venue has been booked already due to the heavy demand at this time of year in Recife. Note that these dates are much earlier than the typical timing of an IEA Congress. The Executive seeks feedback from the Council members on these proposed dates by the end of November of 2007, in order to provide feedback to the Brazilian Ergonomics Society for their pre-planning. The IEA Executive realize that these dates are during term time in some parts of the world but other international conferences such as ICOH have been held in Brazil at a similar time with very large attendances. 9. New Ergonomics Societies The IEA has 42 Federated Ergonomics Societies as members plus one Affiliated Society and two networks. During the last year the Executive has been monitoring the growth of ergonomics in areas of the world where we do not have members. It is wonderful to learn that we have identified 17 countries that are forming or already have one or more Ergonomics Society. Some of these have members who belong to other societies. Below is a list of ergonomics societies that have been formed, marked in *, and those in the formation stage. If your society would be interested in “twinning” with one of these and supporting them through the membership process, please let me know. Cuba Ecuador * Estonia Indonesia * Latvia * Malaysia * Arabian Nigeria * Peru * Puerto Rico Singapore * Sri Lanka Thailand * Tunisia * Venezuela * Vietnam Uruguay 10. Journal Endorsement – WORK The journal, WORK, is now an IEA endorsed journal. The IEA acknowledges the leadership of Karen Jacobs, who besides being the Founding Editor of the journal, is also Chair of the TC on Ergonomics for Children and Educational Environments. We wish to encourage IEA members to contribute to this journal and other IEA endorsed journals. We look forward to providing further IEA activity information in the next Newsletter during December 2007. Yours sincerely, Prof. David C Caple, IEA President |
